Planktothrix agardhii (Gomont) Anagnostidis & Komárek 1988
CCAP 1460/15
Isolator: Yamamoto 1983
Origin: Freshwater; Lake Kasumigaura, Ibaraki, Japan
Culture: Medium JM; Bacteria and fungi or other organisms present; sub + cryo
Other: Orig. desig. "K-O-A-9"; =NIES-2048; •PLK-9; syn. Oscillatoria agardhii Korschikov 1953; TYPE CULTURE; does not have gas vacuoles. More info>>

Genus/species/authority: The name of the species is followed by the author of the name and, in many instances, the date of its first valid publication.

Strain designation: The CCAP strain designation is made up of the Collection acronym, CCAP, followed by the number, which is unique and immutable. The full designation should be quoted in any published material.

Isolator: The name of the isolator and year of isolation.

Origin: The environment from which the strain was isolated is given (eg "freshwater", "soil", “marine”, “brackish”, “animal”); followed by the precise location and the geographical location of origin (if known).

Culture: Details are given of the medium used to culture the strain at CCAP, with modification to standard recipe if applicable. For expansion of media acronyms and recipes see our Recipes. Most cultures are normally supplied in liquid medium unless agar is specifically requested.

The media acronym is followed by an indication of the condition in which the culture is kept:

• note on axenicity - CCAP labels strains as ‘Axenic’ if no bacteria are detected with normal light microscopy and no colonies appear on agar plates of enriched medium (nutrient agar for freshwater strains and ZM/10 for marine strains) inoculated with a drop of the culture and incubated in the dark for at least 1 week at 20 ºC. We accept that DAPI staining or PCR may well show up the presence of bacteria, however, for practical purposes CCAP will use the definition above.

• sub - maintained by serial subculture only

• cryo - maintained by cryopreservation only

• sub + cryo - maintained by serial subculture and cryopreservation

Other: Additional information is listed including details of:

• Other designations by which strain is known

• Identical strains held in other culture collections

• Synonyms

• Type material - a culture derived from material used for the original description and naming of a species is here designated as a TYPE CULTURE

• Pathogen - a strain that is considered to be a pathogen or possible pathogen is designated as PATHOGEN or POSSIBLE PATHOGEN. Special regulations apply to the sale of these strains. Refer to Ordering Pathogenic Strains.

• "formerly listed as" indicates any name(s) under which the strain was formerly listed in the CCAP catalogue (online or print version).

• Other Information eg special notes on usage, morphology etc.

More Info: Opens a new page containing all the available informtion we have on the selected strain, including classification, references and sequence accession references.

The classification system adopted for the algae is attributed largely to van den Hoek et al. (1995), with the exception of the Chlorophyceae and Pedinophyceae which are more contentious. For these we have followed Bold & Wynne (1985). For protozoa, classification is from Adl et al. (2012).

The CCAP website/catalogue should not be taken as an authority for taxonomy or nomenclature.
